Drug Addiction and Mental Disorders

Drug Addiction and Mental Disorders

Unfortunately, drug addiction and substance abuse problems can lead to mental, emotional disorders and in turn, these disorders can also lead to drug addiction problems. Many people begin with depression, anxiety or a similar personality disorder or mental illness, and as a result of not knowing how to get help, they end up self medicating in order to deal with their problems. The problem with self medication is the fact that using drugs or alcohol to quell your pain is unfortunately unable to actually have a positive impact on the body or the mind. You are really only dulling the pain, hiding the symptoms and pretending nothing is wrong. Unfortunately, this is really only going to exacerbate the problem rather than doing anything to help you at all.

If you have a mental disorder and you are using alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism, then you need to get help now more than ever. The two problems are only going to continue to exacerbate the other until you are buried in depression or another mental problem and the self medicating tactics that never actually seem to get the job done.

You cannot use self medication as a way to deal with your problems, because drugs and alcohol are not medication. They are not going to undo the symptoms, they are only going to hide them. If you hide the fact that you are suffering from such a disorder, then you are only going to make things worse rather than better. The truth is that you need to see a professional as soon as possible to get help from your problem before it actually ends up consuming you. The right help is going to have a profound impact on your ability to heal and overcome whatever is plaguing you. Whether you start with an addiction or with a mental disease, the same problems are going to occur unless you are prepared to get help now.
