Drug addiction has the potential to ruin the future of a country. It is the root of

criminalization that arises because of the trade of these drugs in the market. Many people

loose their lives not because of using drugs but because of coming in between a drug was

that was not meant to happen. Drug addiction has given birth to increased cross border

infiltration, with illegal citizens sneaking in with illegal drugs such as cocaine,

marijuana and mets to sell in riches countries and make a quick buck. This has turned out

to be a very uncontrollable problem pushing governments to take extreme steps and spend

millions of dollars in stopping these drug traffickers. But what if the whole system from

the root was changed? This can be done by making all the illegal drugs legal the same way

that prescription drugs currently are. Prescription drugs are equally addictive but are

used in the name of medicine which leads people to abuse them and turn into addicts.

The advantages of making illegal rugs legal can be seen in Portugal. Portugal recently made

drugs such as marijuana and cocaine legal. This has give jobs to a huge number of people

and surprisingly also increased the incoming tourists who are looking to add some fun in

their vacations without getting busted and spending 2-3 years in jail because of drug

abuse. It also has helped Portugal its drug addiction rates which were among the highest in

the world, though the decrease was not that prominent but it did help in proving a point.

Portugal was able to invest the money meant to stop drug trafficking into imparting

knowledge into people about the harmful effects of drug abuse. It can be used as an example

and improved up on to reduce the crime and wastage of resources on drug abuse.
